Raketu has announced a new service into its VoIP offerings Friday with the release of its RakOut WebPhone. The new service allows users to make a VoIP call to landline or mobile phones from any web browser; previously, users could only make a call from computers with Microsoft Windows. The service does not require a download, so calls can be made directly from Raketu’s website.

VoIP services are now almost twice as expensive per hour as other IT services, but despite the expense, VoIP continues to grow faster than other IT services, according to an OnForce report released today. The report credits large roll-outs of tech products like flat-screen TVs and wireless networks for the increase in demand for services.

Historically, SpeechTEK has been a developer’s conference, and I found that to be pretty much true at SpeechTEK 2008 in New York City. There was, perhaps, less talk about new state-of-the-art platforms and VXML than in the past couple of years and more emphasis on the business value of speech-enabled applications. The speech industry is maturing and the focus has moved beyond proving that speech technology is ready to deploy, to bringing down the complexity and cost of deployments. Announcements from Genesys and Nexidia exemplify the new movement .
