Newber’s geo-sensitive autoforwarding

The combination of GPS and a hosted IP PBX service from FreecomVOICE creates Newber, an iPhone application to automatically transfer inbound calls to the most geographically local phone number – sweet!

Newber requires downloading of iPhone client software from Apple’s app store and then entering numbers that can be forwarded from a Newber-assigned number to wherever you want. Inbound calls can be “dumped” from the iPhone to landline in order to save mobile minutes and battery life. It also has a click-to-forward function so you can transfer an inbound call to a set of displayed numbers.

However, the real goodness here is Newber’s ability to tap into the iPhone’s (and no doubt other smart phones down the road) GPS capability to determine the most likely number you want to transfer a call to; for instance, if you’re near the office, the office phone number appears on the screen to click, while at home, the home number displays. If you aren’t close, the app tells you “no number” preference and lets you enter one. The coolness factor involved here is using GPS to auto-select a number to forward, rather than having to remember to update a website or base a forwarding decision upon a static date/time chart.

Newber is currently in beta and will start charging in October for $5 per month plus 2 cents per minutes for calls.
