As the Internet age gets more established, the break off uses for this technology are having a greater impact on communications. Once such creation is the VOIP telephone system. This technology takes advantage of the Internet for the placing and receiving of telephone calls and can often save its users a fair amount of money.

What is a VOIP telephone system?
A voip telephone system is basically one that takes advantage of an Internet connection to place and receive telephones. The acronym actually stands for Voice Over Internet protocol. This type of system allows its users to make and place calls, but the effectiveness will vary depending on the system. Some services sound as good or better than regular telephone, but others suffer from a fair amount of break up in the connection. The cable quality of the Internet connection can come into play here, too.

What kind of calls can be made with a VOIP telephone system?
The particular voip telephone system in question will dictate the calling ability. For example, some services limit calls to only other users of the same service. Others enable calling to any telephone number – landline, VOIP or even mobile.

Does a VOIP telephone system make a regular phone obsolete?
Not necessarily, some VOIP telephone system set ups require calls be placed at the computer, but others work with a special adapter to enable the use of regular telephones within a home. The fairly recent addition of the phone adapters are making this type of service more feasible for use in homes with more than one person as the “land lines” are still functional.

How does a VOIP telephone system work?
A basic VOIP telephone system converts the sound of a voice into a digital signal that can be transmitted over the Internet. This signal is turned back into a regular phone signal prior to it reaching its destination if a landline or mobile is called.

What kinds of phone options do people have with a VOIP telephone system?
This again depends on the system, but in general the three choices are a computer itself, a voip phone or a regular phone with an adapter. Families that are concerned about having access to more than one phone in a home might want to consider the last two choices.

What is required to make a VOIP telephone system work?
All that’s really needed is a computer with a broadband connection and a service. If land lines are desired, the adapter or special voip phone will also be needed. These services are becoming pretty easy to find, too, as more people realize the cost-savings involved in VOIP.

A VOIP telephone system might not be for everyone, but as the technology becomes more advanced, many homes are turning to this to save money and hassles associated with multiple utility charges in their homes.
